RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
