European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
