Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
