WHO Sounds Alert Over Severe Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Under one in 10 people who could benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy are able to get them, states the WHO as it publishes its initial advice on the therapies.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

Based on forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidance recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be managed with thorough and lifelong care," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are key obstacles to broad availability to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing considerable weight, explains the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Despite the current most optimistic scenario, the production of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, according to the health organization.

The advice urges governments and firms to increase access, through measures such as licensing agreements.

A patent on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Operate

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and increase satiety so individuals consume fewer calories.

Patients usually see weight reduction in the initial weeks of beginning the weekly injections.

Evidence points to patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of stopping the drug, when their usual food cravings come back.

To be overweight or obese elevates your chance for developing diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity affects people in all nations and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
